The
castle, one of the oldest buildings in Cyprus, is in Kyrenia and has
played an important role in the history of the island. It is estimated to
have been built for protection against Arab pirates in the 7th
century.The
castle was taken under a full restoration between 1102-1211 by Louisians.
When entered in the castle, a small church is seen at the end of a dark
passage. The tomb near the iron gate is the tomb of the Algerian navy
commander, Sadik Pasha, who has taken the castle in 1570. The castle was
used as barracks and as a prison from time to time. The castle which was
used as a Police College aftr 1946 was then used as a prison to imprison
the Byzantine Greeks who rebelled between 1955-1959. The Byzantine Greeks
got the control of it after 1963 and it was used as a naval base until the
Peace operationin 1974. The castle, a part of which is used as a
Sunken
Ship Museum,
is open to visit. |
