The abbey is in the place known as Cape Andre. It is dedicated to
Apostolos Andreas known as the creator of miracles, the master of winds,
and the protector of travellers. When Andreas, a fisherman, was a disciple of Baptist John, he was
the first person called to be a priest. Therefore he was then called as
“Protoklitos” meaning “the person who is called first”. He went on
a voyage on duty and when he was 80, he was crucified on an olive tree and
killed. Andraes, who cure a captain who was blind and ran out of water on
the way to Jerusalem, told that there could be water a the place where the
abey is now. Finding water there, the people on the ship became christians
and put a very valuable icon of Apostolos Andreas nea the wells; and the
legend started. People who visit the abbey which is holy for both Turksand
Byzantine Greeks vow there. The ones who can not come put olive oil in
bottles and leave it to the sea. It is believed that St. Andreas
(Apostolos Andreas) will take these vows to the abbey and give them
to the priests. |
