Salamis City

The city was founded by tribes coming from Anatolia during the migrations which started nearly at the end of the Bronze Age and the Akads who came from Greece and joined the tribes in Cilicia.the founder of the city seems to be Tefkros, the son of King Telamon of the Salamis Island.Tefkros, who could not prevent his brother Ajax’ suicide and was therefore dismissed by his father, took a group of people whom he took as captives of the Trojan War, came to Cyprus in 1184 B.C., and founded the city. Salamis which changed hands many times was finally taken under the government of a province. After this, a relief was observed in the city due to the situation that the port started to be used by Syrian ships after a new organization. Since the city was later damaged a great deal because of earthquakes and tides, Constantinus II founded the city again and the city was named as constantia. The sand and mud brought by floods closed the port and following this, the city was completely deserted. It was after this event that Famagusta appeared as a large town.
